At the end of both my public speaking and speechwriting courses, students gave an 8-10 minute inspirational speech. The best ones were those in which the student reflected on his or her life and shared something they needed to communicate. They spoke their truth.
While all of the final speeches were good, some were exceptional and deserving of a larger audience. That’s why we created “Penn Speaks”—an annual event in which eight students are asked to share their inspirational speeches with more members of the University of Pennsylvania community. Sharing their work, their truth and wisdom, was the highlight of my teaching experience. I can’t thank them enough for their courage, and their willingness to be vulnerable.
Since most of these speeches were very personal, I decided not to include them.
But, I have shared several final speeches that I gave at the end of the class. A very poor, but honest substitute for their phenomenal work.
Enjoy!
